Dr Giuliana Tiripelli
Giuliana is Senior Lecturer in Media Discourse and Digital Journalism at De Montfort University, which is the global HE hub for the Sustainable Development Goal n. 16 in Britain. She is Deputy Director of the Media Discourse Centre and its Coordinator for Postgraduate and PhD research. Giuliana’s research examines the role of mainstream journalism and social media during situations of social change, instability, and conflict, to shape advice and material about constructive information production. She uses Peace Journalism and other constructive models of journalism for research and training, to stimulate the development of improved and more effective approaches of constructive information, which can facilitate conflict transformation and maintain social cohesion during crises.
Her 2016 book, Media and Peace in the Middle East: The Role of Journalism in Israel-Palestine (Palgrave Studies in Compromise after Conflict), examines the challenges experienced by mainstream journalists and grassroots peace organisations in the context of the Israel/Palestine Oslo negotiations of the 90s, and until the early 2000s. In 2021, Giuliana produced a policy report on “The role of the media in times of crisis” for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which is available open access online. Her recommendations were included in the PACE Resolution 2419 (2022).
